Wellness Warrior &
Marketing Maven
Hola! I’m Abdias Castro,
A yoga teacher, marketing maven & a forever work in progress!
Born in Guatemala, I am the youngest of six. My family migrated to the United States of America when I was only 8 years old. Raised in the South, I consider Summerville, Georgia, my home away from home. Guided by a deep love for helping others, I've always sought to bring joy when it is needed most.
The first major life-changing event occurred at the age of 5–I was sexually abused. A year later, my middle sister was kidnapped, and two years after, my parents decided to immigrate to the United States. These traumatic experiences left me feeling afraid, anxious, and helpless, leading to panic attacks that persisted throughout my life, shaping my mental, emotional, spiritual, and physical well-being.
Before my 8th birthday, violence in Guatemala prompted my family to seek a better life in the U.S. This was a confusing time for me, feeling like I didn't fit in, surrounded by unfamiliar people, language, and culture. These events are not shared for dramatic effect but because they are an integral part of my being, shaping who I am today.
After moving to the U.S., my parents searched for a place to call home, and I worked hard to excel academically. However, as a DREAMER, pursuing higher education presented a challenge due to my immigration status. In 2012, DACA provided me with the necessary documents to work, drive, and live unafraid of deportation, marking a turning point in my life.
I began my career in the restaurant industry and later transitioned to an indie natural beauty brand in Atlanta. Wearing various hats, I navigated through different roles, from warehouse employee to marketing manager. I like to say that I received my Bachelor’s from Real Life University, my Master’s from On the Job University, and Doctorate from YouTube University.
In 2018, I returned to Summerville, GA, feeling a deep calling for more in life.
My transformative journey started as the following events prompted introspection. In 2019, my mother's diagnosis of stage 3 Chronic Kidney Disease added an unexpected layer of pain and complexity. The COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 forced me to confront past traumas, and in 2022, two spontaneous pneumothoraxes halted my life, leading to thoracic surgery and prompting a new period of physical, emotional and spiritual healing. This period was the catalyst for deep reflection on my life's course, bringing forth fear, anxiety, depression, and suicidal thoughts. However, I was able to navigate this challenging time with the support of my therapist, my family and friends, and hope for a brighter future.
In 2023, after turning 30, I chose me and gave myself the best gift of all, time and space to heal. I decided to pursue my yoga teacher certification, marking a pivotal moment in my journey. After the immersive course, I returned rejuvenated, motivated, and decided not to go back to a corporate 9-5 job.
In May 2023, a panic attack prompted a realization of more unhealed trauma. I began to struggle with my breathing developing a condition I now know as chronic breathing tension, aka, air hunger. This led me to discover the Alexander Technique, which not only has helped me find relief, it has transformed my life in its entirety. Today, I am breathing better, living more confidently, and sharing with others that it is possible to manage and overcome trauma, anxiety, depression, tension, and pain.
I share my story with you, even if it isn't the "happiest" one, as I am a living testament to how resilience, love, and a commitment to self-improvement can heal, transform, and change one's life.
